Roofing Term

Cricket

A cricket is defined as a small peaked structure built on the backside of a chimney or other roof penetration to divert water and prevent ponding and debris accumulation. The IRC (International Residential Code) requires a cricket on the upslope side of any chimney wider than 30 inches. Crickets are typically constructed from plywood or OSB sheathing and covered with metal flashing or roofing membrane to create a watertight diversion.
