Roofing Term
Attic Ventilation
Attic ventilation is defined as a system of intake and exhaust openings that allows air to circulate through the attic space, regulating temperature and moisture levels beneath the roof deck. Proper attic ventilation requires a minimum of 1 square foot of net free ventilation area per 150 square feet of attic floor space, or 1:300 if a vapor barrier is installed. Inadequate ventilation can cause premature shingle deterioration, ice dam formation, and mold growth, potentially reducing roof lifespan by 25% or more.
