Roofing Term
Hip Roof
A hip roof is defined as a roof design where all four sides slope downward from the ridge to the eaves, with no vertical gable ends. Hip roofs are more structurally stable and wind-resistant than gable roofs, making them the preferred design in hurricane and high-wind zones. The additional hip ridges and complexity of a hip roof typically add 10% to 15% to roof replacement material costs compared to a gable roof of the same footprint.
