Roofing Term
Rafter
A rafter is defined as a structural framing member that runs from the ridge board at the peak of the roof down to the top plate of the exterior wall, supporting the roof decking and shingles. Standard residential rafters are 2x6, 2x8, or 2x10 lumber, sized based on span length, load requirements, and local building codes. During a roof replacement, rafters are inspected for rot, insect damage, and structural integrity; damaged rafters must be sistered or replaced before new decking is installed.
