Roofing Term

Overhang

An overhang is defined as the portion of the roof structure that extends beyond the exterior wall of a building, providing protection from rain, snow, and sun exposure. Roof overhang depth typically ranges from 12 to 24 inches for residential construction and influences the size of the soffit, fascia, and drip edge required during a roof replacement. Wider overhangs provide better wall and foundation protection but require longer rafters and increase overall roof area.
