Roofing Term
Shingle
A shingle is defined as an individual overlapping element used as the primary weather-resistant covering on a sloped roof. While shingles can be made from various materials including wood, slate, tile, and metal, the term most commonly refers to asphalt shingles in residential construction. Each shingle is fastened to the roof deck with 4 to 6 roofing nails placed in the manufacturer-designated nailing zone, and proper exposure (the visible portion) is critical for achieving the rated wind and weather resistance.
