Who’s Matt? And What is SquareDash?
Hi, I’m Matt, founder and CEO of SquareDash. Right off the bat, there are two things you should know about me:
I’ve always loved helping people. And I’ve never been very good at sitting still.
After growing up in Beaumont, Texas I joined the United States Navy so I could see more of the world while I served my country as an Avionics Technician. Once I was honorably discharged, I found that I had a knack for selling, and that led me to a job knocking on doors for a roofing company. It wasn’t glamorous, but at least I was always on the move. And I discovered that I was pretty good at talking to people (and not taking rejection too personally.)
In 2010, I felt like I had learned enough about the business to go out on my own, and I launched Roofmark Construction. And let me tell you, we grew in a hurry.
More people. More projects. More revenue. That’s all good, right?
Plot twist: Roofmark’s rapid growth almost sent me into bankruptcy.
All my costs—draws, commissions, salaries, materials—were front-loaded. But on a lot of jobs, I was waiting 90 days or more to get paid, and even then it required driving all over town at the end of a 12-hour day, chasing down checks when I should have been having dinner with my family.
When I tell you we had cash flow problems … it was a full-on cash flow catastrophe. I tried to get a line of credit, but our financials didn’t support it. I even experimented with Merchant Cash Advances—selling our future receivables—but with interest rates as high as 60%, the drain on our cash was devastating.
This never-ending cash crisis wasn’t unique to Roofmark. Almost every contractor I met that dealt with insurance claims was feeling the same pain. What I discovered, in the most excruciating ways possible, was that we were all working in a broken system.
So, I decided to fix it.
That’s what contractors do, right? See problem, fix problem. So I put together a team and we created SquareDash—the technology platform dedicated to helping contractors get paid faster on jobs being paid through insurance claims. A lot faster.
